What is the Difference Between a Compact and Full-Size Spare Tire?

A compact, or donut, spare tire is designed to get you off the side of the road and to a repair shop as quickly as possible. It is a smaller version of a regular tire. The full-size spare, on the other hand, is a regular tire, just like the others on your vehicle.

When you’re stranded with a flat, you simply want to get back on the road. A compact tire provides that ability. It’s intended as a temporary fix to an emergency tire situation. The donut tire lacks the tread and capability of a regular tire, so reduced speeds are highly recommended. A full-size spare can be driven just like the regular tires. The issue here is to remember that you have a flat that needs to be repaired, so you always have a spare ready.
